Getting Press Releases Published
The most important thing to bear in mind when writing a press release for your organisation is to make it newsworthy. If you advertise in your press release, journalists will assume that you are after free publicity and will literally bin your work.
A press release is an announcement. If you can imagine people thinking, "I didn't know that," then you are on your way to getting your release published.
Items that can be considered newsworthy are:
- An award that your company has won: focus on the award and not you;
- A poll or survey that your company has conducted: publish the results;
- Recent changes to the law: legal matters that affect you and your clients;
- High profile staff changes: incoming and outgoing staff;
- Community interest: a staff members personal battle with cancer inspires the company to sponsor an event;
- Unusual company perks: childcare facilities onsite for shift workers; table tennis table in staff room or allowing pets at work;
- Competitions: again, focus on the competition more than your organisations.
Focus on providing information and not only on advertising your company and you will find that your publishing record will improve.
